Plantar fasciitis (Heel pain) is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The condition develops due to inflammation of the membrane (Plantar Fascia) at the sole of the foot that attaches to the heel bone. Pain starts with the first few steps out of bed or after rest. Pain usually gets better after few steps but then increases through the day. If the condition is severe, the pain may not decrease and continue to progress with weightbearing on the foot. The condition is usually associated with tight calf muscles.
X-rays may show bone spur at the heel, which may be a common finding in normal population with no pain. So, it is widely accepted that the reason of heel pain in these conditions is due to Plantar fasciitis rather than the heel spur.
Other causes for heel pain may be due to heel stress fracture, nerve compression at the heel or some types inflammatory arthritis like Gout.
